<p>Las Alpujarras area is a fascinating region to explore.</p>
<p>All of our holiday accommodation and our house sales are  located within this beautiful region and staying at any one of them would give you great access to the area and the opportunity to explore it extensively without too much traveling.<img src="../images/cortijo/s5.jpg" alt="" /> and<a href="../casita-notaez-sleeps-2-2/"> Casita Notaez </a> <a href="../4-bedroom-house-to-rent-las-barreras-orgiva/">Cortijo Derry </a>and<a href="../cortijo-mati-sleeps-6/"> Cortijo Mati </a>are all located around  Orgiva, (the capital of Las Alpujarras), so they have easy access to the towns of Orgiva and Lanjaron.</p>
<p>There are many lovely walks and drives within the hills and valleys, and it is a great place to watch birds and animals with many varieties of both. There are also many cultural and historical places to visit here, and whether you want lively city life full of people and fiestas, or quiet sleepy villages with goats strolling down the streets, then this region has it all.</p>
<p><img src="../images/cortijo/orgiva_area_guide.jpg" alt="Orgiva" width="700" /> Orgiva is the main town of Las Alpujarras, and is changing gradually from an old-fashioned market town to a well-equipped and more modern place with a good range of shops, banks, restaurants, and with a thriving population.</p>
<p>Orgiva’s traditional spirit still survives however, and you can stroll around the quiet backstreets full of whitewashed houses and see old ladies sat outside their houses sewing, and people tending their land. Orgiva is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area, and a holiday location in the countryside near Orgiva offers a good mix of quiet countryside yet also access to the shops, bars, cafes etc necessary for the enjoyment of a holiday. There is a striking twin-spire church in Orgiva dating from the 16th century, which is well worth a visit, and several inviting village squares. Many walks and drives begin in Orgiva, all offering stunning views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains and the town nestling in the valley below. The town’s fiesta is at the end Sept to the beginning of Oct.</p>
<p><img src="../images/cortijo/lanjaron.jpg" alt="Lanjaron" width="700" /> Lanjaron is the next nearest town to Orgiva, and is on the road through to Granada city. It is well worth stopping in this town to explore though, rather than just passing through. There is a famous Spa here, and the town’s water is highly regarded and believed to have healing properties. Its drinking water is in high demand and is bottled and sold in several different countries. A bypass has recently been built to help reduce traffic through the streets, and this ensures the town is nice to wander around and to sit passing the time at pavement cafes. Lanjaron has several lovely streets, tree-lined and with beautifully ornate balconies. There is a nice park here, providing a shady retreat from the midday sun. Lanjaron is also famous for its Ham and Water Festival in the summer, where water is thrown into the streets from balconies above, and a great time is had by all, providing you wear waterproofs! There is an old Arab castle at Lanjaron, sat dramatically on a pinnacle of rock overlooking the town. Lanjaron is also situated on several famous walking routes, including the GR7.</p>
<p><img src="../images/cortijo/la_alpujarra.jpg" alt="Las Alpujarras" width="700" /> Towards the other end of Las Alpujarras is the village of Trevelez, which is known as one of the highest villages in Spain. It has a very attractive aspect as you approach as it is nestled in a gorge, and there are many walks beginning here to ascend the mountain range behind. Trevelez is also famous for its air-cured ham called Jamon Serrano.</p>
<p>Within Las Alpujarras are many secluded and peaceful whitewashed mountain villages, often seemingly clinging onto the hillside with the houses all charmingly set higgledy-piggledy on top of one another. These are great places to explore and you really feel as if time has stood still here as you wander from one tiny cobbled street to another. Three particularly well-known white villages are Pampaneira, Bubion, and Capileira and these are all set on the side of the lovely Poqueira Gorge. There are many fascinating walks around here, as well as quiet little cafes, and shops selling beautiful rugs and ceramics. A Tourist Information office is also located in Pampaneira and they can provide details about the walks in the area, as well as other useful information.</p>
<p><img src="../images/cortijo/alhambra.jpg" alt="Granada City" width="700" /> A holiday in Las Alpujarras region would not be complete without a visit to Granada City. This city has so many things to offer, and of such a wide variety. There is the wonderful Alhambra, which can justifiably be described as one of the most unique sights in the world and is surely something which will stay in your mind for many years afterwards. Here there is the dramatic castle overlooking the city below, the peaceful and relaxing gardens full of fountains and the sound of tinkling water, the views to the Sierra Nevada, and the Palace itself with its beautiful architecture and history. Granada city has the historic Albaicin quarter (a World Heritage Site) with its tiny winding streets and flower filled balconies, the huge cathedral, the spectacular Royal Chapel, the Arab Baths, several monasteries and museums, as well as many other gems all waiting to be discovered by the holidaymaker, and of course lots of lovely shops, cafes, restaurants, etc.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>ORGIVA IS GIVEN THE PROJECT FOR THE NEW HOSPITAL</strong></span></p>
<p>The Ministry of Health of the Junta de Andalucía has awarded the  High Resolution Hospital to the Granada town of Orgiva<br />
The budget for the drafting of the bill, which includes basic design and implementation, coordination, safety and health during the project  and execution of the work, construction, supervision and direction of execution of the construction of the hospital, amounts to 819,423 euros. The execution time for this phase is six months .</p>
<p>This health complex, which is a pledge by the regional government,  has already taken 15 years to get this far.<br />
Finally, the construction of the hospital site will provide Orgiva and the surrounding area with the Third Hospital of High Resolution in the province of Granada, after the de Loja, which began service this year and Guadix, in operation since 2006. The total investment needed to carry out this project will amount to 15 million euros.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>ITV CENTER_LOS TABLONES</strong></span></p>
<p>Los Tablones (annex of Órgiva) is to see the opening of the new I.T.V. center (Spain&#8217;s equivalent of M.O.T).</p>
<p>The new station, with an investment of 1, 6 million euros, will have two lines of control and will cover almost  32 municipalities that make up the Alpujarra. In total, 25,000 people will benefit from this initiative, and will not have to go to Motril, Granada or Guadix to check their vehicle.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>OCCUPATIONAL CENTER &#8220;EL ROMERO&#8221;</strong></span>-Los Tablones</p>
<p>The adult Occupational Center &#8216;El Romero&#8221; at Los Tablones of órgiva.</p>
<p>The center, which began operating earlier last year, has received grants from the Board, Caja Madrid, the Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability and the Costa Granada Motril , and the City Council has given the  property.</p>
<p>The center has a capacity for 30 beds. &#8220;At first just 10 people of working age, from various villages in the region , that due to  their disabilities did not have access to regular jobs.&#8221;<br />
Access to the center can be made through Social Services. The main focus is working with users to achieve the highest possible degree of autonomy depending on the capabilities of each. That is, they will be promoted in a positive evaluation of themselves so they feel useful and important, they will improve their personal adjustment, family and social, will be provided with skills to enable them to better integrate into the community.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">CENTRO AGROALIMENTARIO</span></strong>-</p>
<p>This is a logistics center for marketing and distribution of organic and conventional agri-food products, which occupies an area of ​​more than 1,600 square meters and will benefit  all producers of the Alpujarra area. The cost of the center marks around one million euros and will be funded equally between the Junta de Andalucía  and the Town hall  of Órgiva, who have made ​​available the land for the  installations.</p>

<div dir="ltr">The center measures about 500 square meters and is destined  for the collection, storage and subsequent distribution of alpujarreña production, preferably organic, also having a shop intended for direct sale at retail. The building will also have classrooms for the development of seminars and courses and showrooms to exhibit the different products.</div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>54-79 million euros</strong><strong> to be spent in the Granada  A</strong><strong>lpujarra</strong><strong> Region</strong></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">El the Sustainable Management of water and other Projects will be  promoted in the Granada Alpujarra through a program &#8220;Viva Andalucia &#8216;,  it was approved last Tuesday by the  Government  council. The aim is to revitalize   the economy and the quality of life in the rural community with an  independent investment of 289.7 million euros during the  2012-2016 period.<br />
Specifically,  Las Alpujarras of Granada and Almeria will receive 54.79 million euros in the scheme &#8216;Viva Andalucia&#8217;, which it highlights the investment of 12  million euros for the  Orgiva hospital 4.6 million  for the  sustainable Management of the water en la Alpujarra Granada and one million euros for rehabilitation of houses. The  plan aims to revive the economy, create employment, raise the quality of the environment  and social welbeing in these municipalities.<br />
The Andalucian  Government  will be working in colaboration with the Town halls or  &#8216; ayuntamientos&#8217; of  Bubión, Busquístar, ,  Capileira, Carataunas, Lanjarón, Orgiva, Pampaneira, La Taha, Pórtugos, y  Soportujar Trevélez.</div>

<p>Andalucia has a rich tradition in agriculture which has had a huge  influence on the  landscape and culture. The regions climate offers  obvious benefits, but also the diversity of the climate within this area  means that a wide variety of crops can be grown within the region.</p>
<p>The Alpujarra  mountains offer a fantastic opportunity for people  interested in organic growing as the difficulty of the terrain has  prevented large-scale chemical exploitation, typical of conventional  agriculture. The overall ruggedness of the terrain has instead ensured  that traditional, centuries-old practices have remained and these are  now becoming valued for being &#8216;organic&#8217; farming methods.<a href="http://www.alpujarraconect.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/goat1.jpg"><img class="alignleft" title="goat" src="http://www.alpujarraconect.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/goat1-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="125" height="125" /></a></p>
<p>The Alpujarra  includes a variety of different ecosystems. There are  bananas growing in Tijolas, near Órgiva, Oranges,  lemons, avocados and  semi tropical trees in the lower Alpujarra regions, Chestnuts in the  higher Alpujarra and olives and almonds in almost every farm. Grape  vines do well here. On the Contraviesa mountain range there are huge  cork oak forests, almonds and grape vines.</p>
<p>The region is also famous for its livestock: black Iberian pigs are  raised at liberty in oak forests giving us gourmet dry-cured jamon and  spicy sausages (chorizo). The rolling interior mountains are home to  flocks of goats and sheep; goats roaming on the rough mediterranean  scrub;  sheep  grazing on pasture under olive trees. Bee keeping is also  very successful in the <a href="http://www.alpujarraconect.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grape.jpg"><img class="alignright" title="grape" src="http://www.alpujarraconect.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grape-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="120" height="120" /></a>region(there being an abundance of flowering  plants and trees throughout the year) and hives can be seen in many  locations.</p>
<p>Currently organic farming represents the most realistic and  attractive economic alternative to conventional agriculture, so that  more young farmers are deciding to stay in the rural areas. Prices for  olive and almond crops have decreased hugely in recent years and people  are looking into ways to get a better turn over.</p>
<p>This region﻿ will soon benefit from a large agricultural collection  center in Los Tablones de Órgiva. Where a large building is being  constructed which will act as a warehouse for all alpujarra produce so  that it can be  distributed on a wider scale and more effectively.</p>
